The Chagrin Valley Jaycees (CVJC) and the Chagrin Valley Jaycees Charitable Foundation (CVJCF), in cooperation with General Electric – Holiday Lighting Division, located in East Cleveland, is pleased to announce the holiday lighting in Chagrin Falls will be fully upgraded to LED lighting technology this year. The Chagrin Valley Jaycees and Charitable Foundation were able to work with members of the GE Lighting Team to select and design the lighting plan for the Village of Chagrin Falls. This Team designs and decorates the National Tree in Washington DC, the White House tree, Public Square in downtown Cleveland and GE’s Nela Park.

The Christmas Lighting Committee, run by the CVJCF, has been considering an LED lighting upgrade over the past 5 years, however, have been unable to make the changeover due to cost of the many hundreds of strings of lights put up in the Village each year. In addition, LED technology with respect to color duplication of incandescent lights was limited. White LEDs had a blue tint and blue LEDs appeared purple. GE has been very successful in tuning the colors of the LED lights to make their appearance similar to incandescent lights. The JCs and GE Team conducted an evaluation of the available LED lighting products before carefully selecting the products we would use for the Village.
We are very excited to have been able to consult with GE and procure their lights for our display. GE has been the premier company for providing holiday lighting for over 100 years. Their LED lights are Energy Star certified, will last 20,000 hours or more and have ConstantOn technology to keep the whole string lit in the event one bulb goes out.
The most exciting benefit of the LED changeover is the electricity savings. A regular string of C-9 incandescent bulbs uses about 40 watts and would cost about $5.76 for the lighting season (at $0.12/kWh), while the same string of LED bulbs will use about 8 watts of power and cost about $0.96 to light. Given the number of light strings in the holiday lights display, the savings in electricity alone will be great. Not to mention the yearly expense incurred in having to replace the incandescent bulbs every year, as they reach their rated lifetime by the end of each season.
We are currently preparing the new light strings for installation and the Team will be ready to decorate the Village on Saturday, November 15th, 2014. We look forward to seeing everyone at the Lighting of the Greens on Friday, November 28th, when we throw the switch and light the big tree.
